Preface to the
American Edition1
This essay is a book of transition; a true rite of passage, in
which, as a writer, I fi nd the need to cross borders and invite
the reader to join me on a journey that, I believe, will help
us understand the end of this millennium. As a remote descendant
of surrealism and as a participant in the cultural upheaval of 1968,
there was a time when I ingenuously believed, together with An-
dré Breton, that the powers of imagination can never be domesti-
cated, and that in order to change life it is necessary—as the Latin
Quarter graffi ti proclaimed—for imagination to take power. But the
years that followed the 1968 outburst proved that the imagination
in power could create new forms of legitimacy for political power.
us, not only could imagination be domesticated, but its tame and
meek expressions were becoming the most effi cient adversaries of
libertarian utopias. Understanding this situation—now known as
postmodern—has become a diffi cult but necessary transition.
